Now, and since retirement in 2009, I’ve returned to my first love, painting, which grabbed me at age two…finger-painting at an easel of artist family friend Nat Schwarzberg. Two artist residencies, one in Mexico, the other in Northwest Georgia, gave me a concentrated period of time to develop a series of Holocaust portraits called “Portraits of Zinkov”. I grew up in NYC, spent early summers in the Catskills and early adulthood summers on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. My architecture degree studies included 3 years of life drawing and Bauhaus-inspired visual training. In ’74, I passed the architect’s licensing exam, and practiced in that field, with other architects and in my own firm, for 25 years, painting occasionally when time allowed. For example, in the mid-80s and early 90s, I attended several vacation-time workshops with artists Peter London and Seymour Segal exploring ways to increase freedom of expression. In 1992, I switched careers, got a Master’s degree in Special Education, worked 17 years in that field, which also allowed me to have more painting time.
My life experiences are represented in the paintings I am submitting.I have exhibited at the following: Artistree, VT Ava Gallery Members and Juried Shows: Boston University Exhibit, "Where do we come From”: Dartmouth Health, Lebanon: NH Dirt Cowboy Cafe, Hanover NH :Dover Art Center, NH: Farmington Hills Holocaust Museum, Michigan: Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey NH: Library Arts Center, Newport, NH: Loading Dock, Lowell, MA: New Hampshire Art Association, Portsmouth NH: Pleiades Gallery, NYC: Richmond Holocaust Museum, VA: SEBA, Burlington, VT: Sheafe Warf Gallery, Portsmouth NH: SPACE, Burlington, Vt: Sweet Beet Gallery, Bradford, NH: Yeshiva University, Newton Ma: Bradford Library, Bradford, NH: Bromfield Gallery SOWA, Boston MA: Cafe Pierrot, Wilton NH: Cambridge Art Association, Cambridge MA: Chapel Gallery, Saint Anselm's College, Goffstown, NH
